Royal College of Art

The Royal College of Art Retirement Benefit Scheme (“RCA Scheme”) transferred into SAUL on 1 January 2010. The SAUL Trustee must calculate benefits built up before this date in accordance with the Rules of the RCA Scheme as amended by the Transfer Agreement between the trustee of the RCA Scheme and the Trustee of SAUL.

In effect this means that benefits built up in the RCA Scheme are largely preserved, calculated and increased in the same way but are held and paid by SAUL. Employees of the Royal College of Art who are active members of SAUL will build up benefits under the SAUL Rules after 1 January 2010.

When you leave or retire we tell you which portion of your benefits was built up under the RCA Scheme and how this was calculated using the RCA Scheme Rules and the Transfer Agreement. We’ll also tell you what your options are with your RCA benefits and, if applicable, how these benefits will increase.

Please note that the information about pension benefits on this website does not relate to benefits built up while in employment by the Royal College of Art prior to 1 January 2010.  If you have benefits built up under the RCA Scheme and require a quotation or more information about how these are calculated and treated please contact us.

Superannuation Fund, Pension and Life Assurance Scheme (SFPLAS)

Prior to 6 April 1976 some of the SAUL employers put their non-academic staff into pension arrangements called SFPLAS. When SAUL was set up all the liabilities of the SFPLAS scheme were transferred into SAUL.

Active members of SFPLAS who joined SAUL on 1 January 1976 were given a pensionable service credit in SAUL equivalent to their service in SFPLAS so the benefits relating to this service are calculated and treated as SAUL benefits.

Please note that the information about pension benefits on this website does not relate to benefits built up in SFPLAS for members of that scheme who left before April 1976. If you have benefits built up under SFPLAS only and require a quotation or more information about how these are calculated and treated please contact us.
