Maternity, paternity, adoption and family leave Death benefits during temporary absence
Maternity, paternity, adoption and family leave During maternity, paternity, adoption or family leave you have the peace of mind that you will still be a SAUL member and therefore covered for death in service benefits. While you are on ordinary leave – even if it’s at a reduced rate – you will still build up benefits in SAUL based upon your full salary. During paid maternity, paternity or adoption leave contributions to SAUL will be paid based upon the actual pay that you receive. If you are on unpaid leave you will not build up Pensionable Service in SAUL unless you are on ordinary maternity or adoption leave. If you wish you can pay extra contributions to make up the Pensionable Service you did not build up while your membership was suspended. You can do this by paying the member and employer contributions. Please speak to your Pensions Officer for more information.
If you are paid during your sick leave you will continue to pay contributions to SAUL based upon your normal Salary so you will continue to build up Pensionable Service in the usual way. If you are on unpaid sick leave, since you will not be contributing to SAUL, your membership will be suspended until you return to work. You will not build up pension benefits in SAUL during periods of unpaid sick leave
If you are away from work because of a trade dispute, we will suspend your membership until you return to work — unless you and your employer carry on paying contributions. If you do not return to work, we will treat you as though you had left employment on the first day your absence began.
During paid leave contributions to SAUL will be paid based upon the actual pay that you receive and you will continue to build up Pensionable Service - although this will be based upon your actual contributions. If you are on unpaid leave you will not build up Pensionable Service in SAUL. If you wish you can pay extra contributions to make up the Pensionable Service you did not build up while your membership was suspended. You can do this by paying the member and employer contributions. Your employer can choose whether to continue contributions to SAUL. Please speak to your Pensions Officer for more information.
Death benefits during temporary absence If you die during a period of temporary absence SAUL’s rules about death in service will still apply. However, during unpaid leave, death benefits will be calculated as though you had died on the day before your Pensionable Service stopped building up. The lump sum payable upon death may be higher in certain circumstances. If you would like more information about how these rules apply exactly, please contact us. |
