UNISON UNISON actively campaigns to protect members and potential members pension rights. UNISON Representatives strive to ensure that people still at work can look forward to decent pensions and for better pensions for today's pensioners. UNISON believes that everyone should be able to retire in dignity with a decent occupational pension. UNISON has worked with SAUL’s sponsoring employers for over 30 years to provide SAUL members and their dependants with a highly regarded final-salary pension scheme with an excellent package of benefits, e.g. survivor’s pensions and lump sum death benefits. It is also important to remember that your occupational pension from SAUL is your deferred pay and is a core part of your terms and conditions of employment and forms an important part of your total compensation (wage) package, Which means that you could effectively be taking a pay cut if you are eligible and don’t join. Unite the Union When you are employed by the University of London they will offer you membership to the SAUL pension scheme. It is an important decision to make. Unite the Union would recommend you join this Employer scheme as your State Pension at retirement will probably not be enough to live on, having a second pension such as SAUL, which is a final-salary pension scheme would make your life in retirement more comfortable. There are a number of benefits that you would gain by joining, such as you would pay a percentage of your salary to the scheme which would be tax exempt and your employer will contribute at least twice your contribution as well, there are more benefits which you can acquire from the SAUL Rules, on page 32 under the heading of Membership, Contributions and Benefit Provisions.
